Person with Communication Challenges

This is a Finding Words story!

Patronize.
The most frustrating part of having aphasia is when doctors and nurses patronize me. They do not understand aphasia and don’t want to take the time to learn. If you have aphasia, you must have a positive attitude. No one wants to listen to a cry baby. Aphasia is a personal battle. Doctors, nurses, wives and friends can only help so much, the rest is up to you. You must forget about the past, and live for the future. You need a new life, with new friends, and new goals. C’est la vie.

  1. As I go to the doctor’s office with my son who has severe aphasia I get very frustrated when the doctors looks me for answers. I want to tell the doctor to talk to my son, not to me. He has an opinion and it is his health being addresses. I find myself looking away from the doctor and focusing on my son. I am only there to help interpret for him and to hear what the doctor says because it would be impossible for him to tell me later.
